In the world of television, MTV’s SCREAM and American Horror Story Season 7 both shared significant updates, while the jaw-dropping Season 8 trailer for The Walking Dead ( returning this October) premiered at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.
In film, new installments in James Wan’s haunted universe have moved forward A LOT! And I mean A LOT! The Nun (the prequel to The Conjuring 2) has a revealed plot and cast, and Annabelle: Creation (the sequel to Annabelle and the prequel to The Conjuring) debuts in theaters this week — with early reviews suggesting another huge hit for the mega successful franchise. There’s also a new spinoff to The Conjuring 2 in the works, which will focus on the “Crooked Man”. Finally, The Conjuring 3 is also in development.

And, before I lose my breath mid sentence here, let me share three more important updates— one super sad and two super exciting ones! Starting with the exciting ones, we got two new teaser pics revealing the beast that is IT, plus a fresh new teaser that has horror fans buzzing. And the campy cult favorite franchise, SHARKNADO, returned to wreak havoc with the premiere of Sharknado 5: Global Swarming on Syfy. On a much sadder note, we recently lost a legend with the tragic passing of The Godfather of Zombies, George A. Romero at the age of 77.

To kick off this recap, let’s start with my personal favorite, SCREAM. MTV’s Scream, now under the umbrella of executive producer Queen Latifah (with Brett Matthews (Vampire Diaries) serving as showrunner), has added Tyga and C.J. Wallace as series regulars for the slasher’s third season. The six-hour third season, which is slated for premiere in March 2018 as a three-night event, is moving from New Orleans to Atlanta. Per Deadline, the series will follow “Deion Elliot, a local star running back whose tragic past comes back to haunt him at the worst time, threatening his hard-earned plans for his future — and the lives of his unlikely group of friends.” There’s a rumor circulating that the original mask from the films may make a return this season, but whether that’s true or not remains to be seen.
AMERICAN HORROR STORY

At long last, American Horror Story‘s season 7 has a title, and it’s American Horror Story: Cult. What’s more, Emma Roberts will be returning to the series. I was searching the web for news on my favorite series, SCREAM, when I came across this tidbit from Deadline:
“Another member from Ryan Murphy’s collective of actors is joining American Horror Story: Cult. AHS alumna and former Screen Queens star Emma Roberts posted on Instagram a photo of herself armed with a knife with the caption, “I’ve joined #ahscult, will you?” Murphy posted the same picture, writing, “Look who showed up on the set of Cult looking glamorous and ready for action.”
I love Emma Roberts and am really looking forward to her return. Other confirmed cast members include Cheyenne Jackson, Billie Lourd, Colton Haynes, Alison Pill, and Billy Eichner. They’ll be joining returning stars and fan favorites, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters.

The season’s title was revealed at the most recent SDCC, “where a series of images of unsettling and sinister-looking clowns set against a red, white and blue palette were projected onto a mist of water.” The theme was also teased to be partly about our past election (sort-of like I predicted a while back). Here’s what season star Billy Eichner had to say [via Late Night With Seth Meyers]: “It is inspired by the election. It starts on election night and then you see the fallout from that, and it is a gory, fantasy, violent, sexual, surreal take on post-Trump America.”
Further details are still shrouded in in secrecy as of now. But AHS fans can ‘join the cult’ when the undoubtedly twisted new 11-episode season premieres on September 5th. In the meantime, check out some of the creepy new teaser trailers below.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
IT

While one popular Stephen King adaptation, The Dark Tower, makes its theatrical debut, the new cinematic retelling of King’s IT prepares to terrify audiences this September. Directed by Andres Muschietti (Mama), IT has the following plot synopsis: “When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.”
The film will star Bill Skarsgård as the story’s central villain, Pennywise the clown. He’ll be terrorizing an ensemble of young actors, including Jaeden Lieberher (Midnight Special), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip), Sophia Lillis (37), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy), Chosen Jacobs (Cops and Robbers), Jack Dylan Grazer (Tales of Halloween) and Nicholas Hamilton (Captain Fantastic).
These new pics were dropped via Bloody Disgusting featuring PENNYWISE in all of his creepy glory.

As we prepare to hit the theaters for Annabelle: Creation, let’s talk about the rest of the ever-expanding Conjuring universe. First up is The Nun. Interestingly enough, the franchise is keeping it in the family, as Taissa Farmiga (sister to franchise star Vera Farmiga) has been cast opposite Damian Bichir — alongside Bonnie Abrams, returning to her role as the infamous Valak.
The film is scheduled for release July 13th, 2018, and will be “set in the forties, fifties” as recently revealed (via DC) by cinematographer Maxime Alexandre. It follows the story-line of “a priest named Father Burke (Alien: Covenant‘s Damian Bichir) who travels to the Italian city to investigate the mysterious death of a nun at a convent. As he dives deeper into the riddle of her death, he uncovers a dark secret and finds himself face-to-face with the otherworldly spirit that first terrified audiences in The Conjuring 2.”

As a bonus, we also got some dirt on The Conjuring 3 and another prequel/spinoff born from The Conjuring 2, The Crooked Man. James Wan, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, revealed The Crooked Man is in its “early stages” and is apparently “cooking away.” Wan added,
“I would love to push it more down somewhat of that dark fairytale, and more whimsical, sub genre. I love the idea that, within the Conjuring universe, each of our little movies all have their own flavor, so that way they don’t feel like they’re the same films.”
Wan also revealed in the [EW] interview that work had begun on The Conjuring 3, though he didn’t expect to direct the sequel. “We’re in the midst of working on the script, and still hashing [it] out,” said Wan. “We want to make sure that the script is in a really good place. With how much people have loved the first two Conjuring films, I don’t want to rush in to the third one if possible.” That means horror fans will have to stay tuned to more news about when to expect the next two installments in the franchise.
NOW SHOWING

The highly anticipated sequel to Annabelle, about the demonic doll first introduced in The Conjuring, opens this weekend (August 11, 2017). It stars Stephanie Sigman (SPECTRE), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave), Lulu Wilson (Ouija: Origin of Evil, Deliver Us from Evil), Philippa Coulthard (After the Dark), Grace Fulton (Badland), Lou Lou Safran (The Choice), Samara Lee (Foxcatcher, The Last Witch Hunter), and Tayler Buck in her feature film debut. It also features Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) and Miranda Otto (Homeland, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy). Following the storyline of “a dollmaker and his wife who, several years after the tragic death of their little girl, welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home. Very soon, however, they become the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.” Check out the new teasers below and click here to read our early review.

Brace yourself for the Sharknado! David Michael Latt’s Sharknado 5 blew in this week on Syfy, boasting many more noteworthy cameos, including imprisoned Dance Moms’ alum Abby Lee Miller, VHI reality-star/rocker veteran Brett Michaels, soap-opera heartthrob Fabio, Olivia Newton John, and so many more. The 5th installment, according to TVLine, picked up “not too long after the events of The 4th Awakens.” Global Swarming quickly established that Nova has assembled the Sharknado Sisters, a secret society of fighters. Enlisting Fin’s help, they go all Raiders of the Lost Ark to procure an ancient artifact that can vanquish sharknados. Or create them. Maybe both! I wasn’t clear on that.
Whereas every Sharknado motion picture before it had the heroes/humanity being dogged by toothy twisters, Global Swarming was more about Fin, April and Nova chasing after the funnel that sucked up their son Gil, only to get “warped” from country to country every time they came close.
The installment managed to break Twitter, leaving even the hugely popular HBO series Game of Thrones (which aired at the same time) in its dust.
HARD TO SAY GOODBYE
RIP George Romero

Unfortunately, we have to end on a sad note. Hugely influential horror filmmaker and genre pioneer George A. Romero passed away on July 16, 2017. His death at the age of 77 was reportedly due to lung cancer. He is best known for his series of gruesome and satirical horror films about an imagined zombie apocalypse, beginning with Night of the Living Dead (1968), which is often credited as giving birth to the popular portrayal of zombies in modern culture. Romero’s impact on the genre cannot be overstated, and his lasting legacy will never be forgotten. Click here to read our tribute to the horror master.
