In Case You Missed It: While You’ve Been Decking the Halls, a Lot Has Happened in Genre News…So Here’s Your Ho-Ho-Horror Recap!
So it’s Christmas time, time for Sant-y, cookies, milk and…horror films? In my below monthly recap, yule (see what I did there) find everything you missed since last month.
When last we met, Halloween was dying down and Turkey Day was approaching. I rambled on about Insidious: The Last Key, Hellraiser: Judgement and Are You Afraid Of The Dark. And now, here I am back again, with news on Children Of The Corn: Runaway, Halloween, Stranger Things, Victor Crowley, Night Of The Living Dead: Rebirth, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, Ash VS Evil Dead, and Fear The Walking Dead — plus my take on current genre news.
But before I begin, put up your damn feet, turn on White Christmas by Bing Crosby, crank up the heat (it’s cold out), and if you have a tree, light it. That’s all I’m asking. And so I shall begin.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
HALLOWEEN (2018): MORE TENSION, LESS GORE. LAURIE STRODE’S FAMILY GROWS!
You read right, David Gordon Green and Danny McBride want to make their Halloween sequel, which is to ignore all the franchise’s previous sequels, have more emphasis on the tension and dread factors rather than the prime gore factor, like John Carpenter’s 1978 installment accomplished.
In Green and McBride’s version, the so called “Shape” that we’ve all come to love (weirdly), isn’t even said to be Laurie’s brother, returning the franchise nearly to the beginning, crashing away the building blocks that were Halloween 2-8 (not including Rob Zombie’s trash job) and, well, in the words of McBride via Charleston City Paper, “Bringing back the creep factor”.
McBride let the world know that his and Green’s vision will in fact homage Carpenter’s and the late Debra Hill’s work on HALLOWEEN, which he felt was “all about tension” by “[minding] that dread, [minding] that tension and not just [going] for gore ultra-violence, like some horror movies lean on”. Am I looking forward to it? In a word, yes!
For the latest installment in the franchise, Judy Greer will play Laurie Strode’s latest off-spring, with Andi Matichak signed on to play Strode’s granddaughter, Alison. John Carpenter is on call as executive producer and possibly the man behind the film’s score. Filming for this slasher sequel has been delayed as of recently for a January shoot with the October 19th, 2018, release date still stalking the presses.
Will the film be done in time? Time. Will. Tell.
CHILDREN OF THE CORN RUNAWAY: COMING 2018 ACCORDING TO “RUTH”
Ok so “Ruth” is a character to be portrayed by Marci Miller for Dimension Film’s latest Children Of The Corn sequel, Children Of The Corn: Runaway; Miller revealed via Instagram the film had a 2018 release date to a fan as of recently. Miller revealed the film was coming soon and then subsequently revealed the film had a February/March release date with the film having Miller in her starring role as “Ruth”.
“Runaway tells the story of a young women named Ruth, who finds herself pregnant after trying to escape a murderous child cult in a small Midwestern town. Ruth struggles to spare her son the horrors of her childhood while trying to outrun her past.”
The ‘Children Of The Corn’ franchise is currently being given new life by Dimension Films, which has ties to The Weinstein Company (at the center of controversy due to Hollywood predator Harvey Weinstein). The genre-staple franchise began with the adaption of Stephen King’s novel of the same name starring Linda Hamilton.
Children Of The Corn: Runaway is being directed John Dulager (Feast).
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD REBIRTH: THE BIRTH OF THE FIRST TRAILER
Though, sadly George Romero passed away before he could see it, it’s finally here; the trailer for Night Of The Living Dead: Rebirth was dropped…VIEW IT BELOW:)
“A tense visit to their family’s burial site, quickly escalates into a fight for survival when brothers Adam and John are randomly attacked by servers unknown assailants.”
Night Of The Living Dead: Rebirth is written and directed by Roger Connors, starring himself alongside Aswan Harris, Alvin Hudson, Rachel Anderson, Bradley Arner, Taylor Nélms and RJ Messenger. Rebirth is produced by Rising Pulse Productions in affiliation with Mouse Nest productions.
Enjoy the trailer.
VICTOR CROWLEY: THE LATEST ENTRY IN THE HATCHET FRANCHISE SLASHES OUR WAY 2018
Adam Green’s [secretly filmed] Victor Crowley, which was on tour for special one-night screenings in August through November, is finally getting a home video release!
According to Dark Sky Films on Twitter, the fourth installment to the slasher franchise will be coming February 6th, 2018.
“In 2007, fourty-nine people were brutally torn to pieces in Louisiana’s Honey Island Swamp. Over the past decade, Andrew Yong’s claim that local legend Victor Crowley was responsible for the horrific massacre have been met with great controversy, but when a twist of fate puts him back at the scene of the tragedy, Crowley is mistakenly resurrected and Yong must face the blood thirsty ghost from his past.”
Kane Hodder, of Friday The 13th fame, returns with Parry Shen, Felissa Rose, Laura Ortiz, Dave Sheridan and Brian Quinn also starring.

Reported by Deadline, Walking Dead star Lennie James is to be a-part of Fear The Walking Dead‘s fourth season, beginning with the show’s 2018 premiere. James is known for his role as Morgan Jones on The Walking Dead, and will joined in Fear The Walking Dead‘s new season by fellow new-comer, Maggie Grace, of “Lost” fame.

The crossover was explained in one of my past updates. Dickens, Dillane, Debnam-Carey, Domingo and Garcia are all set to return for season 4 of the zom-pocalypse series.
Fear returns mid-2018.
ASH PLANS ON CASHING IN ON HIS FAME; NEW PIC AND PLOT DROPPED FOR ASH VS EVID DEAD SEASON 3!
Ash VS Evil Dead season 2 concluded with Ash’s sins (in the eyes of the town) being washed away as he revealed to his hometown the truth about Deadites and himself: He’s not a killer of people, home-towners…He’s a killer of people-turned-Deadites! Get it right! So, as Ash was dubbed hero in the conclusion, the aftermath seems to still rein-on for the third coming of the series.
According to TV Insider with franchise star Bruce Campbell, the third season finds Ash “Like any shallow person — determined to cash in on his fame.” A new pic from the season also dropped, and Campbell dished, “[Ash is] revving up the crowd at the grand opening of Ashy Slashy’s Hardware (And Sex Toy) Emporium.” Seems like a jump from the S-Mart, don’t you think?
“The third season finds Ash, having gone from murderous urban-legend to humanity-saving hometown hero, discovering he has a long-lost daughter entrusted to his care. When Kelly witnesses a televised massacre with Ruby’s fingerprints all over it, she returns with a new friend to warn Ash and Pablo that evil isn’t done with them yet. But evil will learn to never get in between a papa bear and his cub.”
Ash VS Evil Dead season 3 kicks Deadite-a*s this upcoming February 25th, 2018, at 9pm ET/PT. The season will also be available to stream or download via the STARZ app.
NETFLIX AND KILL
NETFLIX MOVES FORWARD WITH STRANGER THINGS SEASON 3
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, EVERYBODY has Stranger Things fever! Everybody loves that 80s nostalgia, and now fans have more to get excited about. Stranger Things, starring Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice), has been announced to be moving forward on season 3! Can I get a “WHOOP, WHOOP” from you Stranger Things fans?
Netflix moves forward on Stranger Things season 3, with 13 Emmy nominations + 5 wins among other prestigious awards for the series, such as the S.A.G. award for Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series, already under their belt.
Stranger Things is created by the Duffer brothers, whom also serve as executive producers. The brothers serve as directors as well, alongside Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Iain Patterson. Ryder stars alongside David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Cara Buono, Natalie Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Kerry, Steve Harrington and Sadie Sink.
Stay tuned for Stranger Things season 3 coming to Netflix by sometime in 2019. Yeah I know, it’s a year away. Bummer.
BYE BYE, CW, HELLO, NETFLIX! THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA MOVES TO NETFLIX
Originally said to be a sister series to Riverdale on The CW, the dark take of Sabrina The Teenage Witch moves to Netflix for a two season, 20 episode order.
The decision for this jump-ship is described by this journalist as plain and simply this: There’s another witch-inspired series in production that The CW hopes will be picked for a series [so they booted Sabrina out], and on the Warner Bros. front, they just want full rights to Sabrina, rather than share them like they do with Riverdale.
The series that The CW wants to hype more is Jennie Snyder Urman’s (Jane The Virgin) Charmed reboot. Charmed is owned by CBS, which is The CW’s corporate cousin due to their business model.
With The CW losing one show for another, yet still getting their Witch series either way, it really isn’t a loss for them. Nor is it much of a loss for the owners of Sabrina, Warner Bros. Let me explain why: With Sabrina now traveling to Netflix, this weasels WB from having to share their rights and profits with a second party, i.e The CW’s corporate cousin, CBS, as they would have to due to (like previously mentioned) The CW’s business model.
“The series is being described as to be tonally in vein of horror classics like Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual-nature as a half-witch, half-mortal, while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa executive produces the project with Lee Toland Krieger, Berlanti Prods.’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter as well as Archie Comics’ Jon Goldwater.
STAY TUNED!
